KISS A NATIVE TAKES PEGAUS BY FIVE LENGHTS
East Rutherford, N.J...Canadian shipper Kiss A Native exploded late in the lane to capture the $250,000 Grade 2 Pegasus Handicap at the Meadowlands on Friday night by five lengths.
"It's obvious now that he's ready for the next level," said winning trainer David Bell, who won the 1993 Haskell Invitational with this horse's sire, Kissin Kris. "He won't go to the Breeders' Cup. We'll probably give him a month off and then decide where to go with him."
Ridden by Mickey Walls, Kiss A Native returned $10.20, 5.20, 3.60, and covered the mile and an eighth in 1:48 1/5. Fellow Canadian import Cool N Collective paid $13.60, 6.60 and completed a $140.60 exacta. Pine Dance was a nose back in third returning $4.
The win was the eighth in 12 tries for Kiss A Native, who now has lifetime earnings of $736,940 for owner John Franks.
In the night's earlier racing action, Loaded Gun rallied on the outside to capture the $45,000 Accordant Handicap by a half-length over Spectacular Slew.
Owned and trained by Janis Gerace and ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, Loaded Gun covered the six furlongs in 1:09 2/5 and paid $5.60 as the favorite. Spectacular Slew completed a $21.40 exacta and bested Red Weasel by another length and a quarter.
The win was the 13th in 38 tries for the New Jersey bred by Prosper Fager who now has lifetime earnings of $545,807.
The $45,000 Broad Brush Stakes saw Spiritofspain take the field gate to wire to capture the mile and 70 yards event by 2 1/2 lengths.
Trained by Joe Russo and ridden by Dean Butler, Spiritofspain paid $8.60 and topped a $51.20 exacta. Fortunate Streak was second and bested show horse Chief Cashier by 2 1/4 lengths.
It was the third win in a row for the four-year-old gelding by Montbrook, who now has a bankroll of $113,920 for owner K.E.D. Stable.
Come Back Ronnie, who was supplemented to the $45,000 John Henry Stakes, took the event by a nose at the wire over Buying Rain.
Trained by Richard Schosberg and ridden by Ramon Dominguez, Come Back Ronnie covered the mile over a firm turf course in 1:34 1/5 and paid $19.20. Buying Rain completed an $87.80 exacta and bested third place finisher Makeyourselfathome.
The victory was the sixth in 56 tries for the five-year-old by Tsunami Slew giving him lifetime earnings of $220,170 for owner Richard Englander.
