NORTH EAST BOUND CAPTURES CLIFF HANGER 'CAP AT BIG M
East Rutherford, N.J...North East Bound and jockey Jose Velez, Jr. drew away in late stretch to capture the featured $150,000 Cliff Hanger Handicap at the Meadowlands on Friday night, before a crowd of 8,264.
 
A four-year-old gelding by D'Accord, North East Bound and Johnny Dollar made all the running out of the gate and stayed to finish one-two at the wire.
 
"I can't believe how good this horse ran today," said winning trainer Bill Perry. "After this I might have to consider the Breeders' Cup with him. I'm not sure which of the turf races, but the way this horse is going right now he could fit in there."
 
North East Bound covered the mile and 1/16 over a firm turf in 1:41 3/5 to take the Grade 3 event by three lengths and returned $11.60. Long-shot Johnny Dollar completed a $403.20 exacta and bested third place finisher Swamp by 3/4 of a length.
 
The win was the fourth in six tries this year for North East Bound, who now sports lifetime earnings of $516,040 for owner De Marco and Disano.
 
In the night's undercard stakes action, Daisy Dukes recovered from a slow start and gained command in mid-stretch to capture the $45,000 Prom Stakes for two-old-fillies in :58 for the five furlongs over a firm turf course.
 
Trained by Guadeloupe Preciado and ridden by Carlos Cruz, Daisy Dukes returned $18.80 and bested runner-up Sea O'Love by two lengths who completed a $129.80 exacta. Odds-on favorite Marq of Beauty, who was supplemented to the race was third.
 
The win was the second in as many tries for the daughter of Ghazi who now boasts lifetime earnings of $41,250 for owner Wendy H. Mutnick.
 
In the $45,000 Prismatical Stakes, Sashobegon took control at the top of the stretch and held off the charge of favorite Back in Shape to take the mile and 70 yards event in 1:41 2/5.
 
Ridden by Jozbin Santana and trained by the veteran Richard Small, Sashobegon returned $9.60 and topped a $27.60 exacta. It was 1 3/4 lengths back to Back in Shape who bested Belle Cherie by two lengths.
 
A five-year-old mare by Broad Brush, Shashobegon now has career earnings of $528,154 for owner, trainer and breeder Small.
