LUZZI NOTCHES 2,000 VICTORY AT BIG M WEDNESDAY
East Rutherford, N.J...Jockey Mike Luzzi captured his 2,000th career victory on Wednesday night at the Meadowlands when he guided Magic Merlin to a nose victory in the fourth race.
Magic Merlin returned $4 as the odds-on favorite and topped a $12.60 exacta over Lucky Al. Pride of the Fox was third in the maiden claiming event originally scheduled for the turf but transferred to the dirt after overnight rain.
A three-year-old colt by Gulch, Magic Merlin covered the mile over a fast main track in 1:39 and now boasts career earnings of $10,120 for owner Stonerside Stable.
Born October 27, 1967 in Wilmington, Delaware, Luzzi's career started at Laurel in 1989 the same year he won the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. He is the grandson of the late veteran trainer Virgil "Buddy" Raines.
